Diversity in the Workplace at Urban Brew

What is workplace diversity, why is it important, what are some tips and how do we ensure there is diversity at Urban Brew?

This topic is not about coffee for once (what?!), but it is still something very important to both me and my business, and that is creating a diverse workplace. A diverse workplace has been an important topic in companies for decades and is becoming more essential than ever.

So what is workplace diversity?

Let’s get technical! The definition of diversity is “the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, colour, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.” so basically anything that sets one individual apart from another. Workplace diversity involves positively creating an environment that embraces and values differences and also encouraging a variety of opinions and new ideas and creating company culture.


Why is diversity important?

Many employers have realised that workplace diversity is super important and comes with bunch of benefits - I know I sure have! It has given me access to a great range of talent and provides insights into the needs of my whole customer base rather than just a small part of it.

It’s important for a business to always be progressing and innovating, and this would be hard if everyone were the same and had similar thinking, this wouldn't work well for the creativity side of things! A diverse workplace will have different ways of thinking and ideas booming and will ensure that your customers are well served.

Most importantly, it creates an awesome company culture and makes employees excited to come to work!


Diversity in Urban Brew

Having a diverse team here at Urban Brew has had such a positive impact on how the business runs and makes coming to work enjoyable! I have made every effort to create a diverse workplace, with 50% of our staff being new arrivals or refugees. Not only that, I have hired people who may have little or no experience because I feel they would be a good fit in the company!

It was with my mum’s help that I was able to tap into the resources at the Welcoming Centre (where she works) and find a lot of my staff. The Welcome Centre are doing amazing things in the SA community by providing a space for refugee families, helping people seeking asylum, recently arrived migrants and of course the local community. Tips for creating a diverse workplace

Whether you’re an employer or employee, there’s a bunch of things you can do to bring more diversity into your workplace! Here are some tips that I’ve found work for Urban Brew:

  • Keeping an open mind when hiring and finding out more about their personality and background rather than their skills.
  • Encouraging yourself and others to be themselves and be honest.
  • Ditch the dress code if you can – we dress casual here!
  • Team building skills - Every morning at 10am we meet up and discuss how we feel, our plans/goals, whether we need help, wins/losses and what we’re grateful for.
  • Sharing your ideas with no judgement - No matter what your role is, your ideas matter and work collaboratively with others.
