How to use your leftover Urban Brew coffee pod grounds in garden compost

Most of us think of coffee as a magical bean that wakes us up and fuels our day. It’s a quick part of our daily routine - we put a pod in our machine, brew our coffee and then dispose of the pod because there’s no more use for it. I mean, that’s all coffee pods can be used for, right? WRONG!

The life of your Urban Brew coffee pods doesn’t have to end once you’ve made your cup of coffee. The leftover grounds can serve as much purpose as the brew itself! From fertilizing your garden to boosting your beauty routine, you’d be amazed at how much of a game changer using your leftover coffee grounds can be!

Coffee grinds

You may be wondering what the best way to get your leftover coffee grounds out of your pods is. We've created a blog where I demonstrate how to use a metal teaspoon to open up your pods and scoop out the coffee grounds which you can read HERE

Check out these 8 awesome uses that I found for your leftover coffee grounds:

Body scrub

As coffee is quite coarse, it works amazingly at exfoliating dirt and dead cells off skin. Simply mix coffee grounds with water or coconut oil and scrub away! You can even mix coffee grounds with honey for a lip exfoliating scrub.

Remove build up in hair and speed up growth

Everyday hair products can lead to residue build up on your hair. Exfoliating your scalp with coffee grounds can help banish build up and even stimulate hair growth! Be sure to wash and rinse your hair as usual after scrubbing.

Treat under eye circles

Due to its high antioxidant and caffeine content, coffee grounds can help prevent the appearance of aging and under-eye circles and can also stimulate blood circulation. Add water or coconut oil to your coffee grounds to form a paste and apply underneath your eyes for about 10 minutes and rinse.

Fertilize your garden

Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and chromium which are great to optimise plant growth.

Coffee grounds contain compounds that are toxic to many insects, so it can be used to repel mosquitoes, fruit flies, beetles and many other pests! Try sprinkling some around outdoor seating areas.

Remove fleas from your pet

Fleas do not like coffee, so coffee grounds can be used as a natural flea removal for your pets. Simply rub coffee grounds through your pet’s fur after shampooing, rinse it out and let your pet dry.

Neutralize odours

Coffee grounds contain nitrogen, which is known to eliminate foul smells when combined with carbon. Putting a bowl of coffee grounds in your fridge or freezer and the bad odours will be absorbed right up!

Make candles with them

You can re-purpose your coffee grounds by making a homemade candle and have your house smelling like fresh coffee all day long!
